PREPARING TO READ

Before you read the article “Set a Summer Goal,” ask your students the following pre-reading question:

READING AND DISCUSSION

  • Have your students read the article “Set a Summer Goal”; read the article out loud to them; or have students partner-read the article out loud.
  • After they’ve read the article, revisit the pre-reading question. Have their answers changed?

In A GOAL WITH A PLAN, have students follow the example of the teens from the article to set a goal that they can achieve over their summer vacation from school. Have them plan for success by taking notes in the skills sheet, which is divided into the following different sections, similar to the article: “How I’ll Do It,” “Staying On Track,” “Overcoming Setbacks,” and “Expert Advice Reminder.” For the “Expert Advice Reminder” section, they can reread the article and reflect on which piece of advice mentioned in the article applies to their own plan. Encourage them to keep their goals sheet in a visible place over the summer so they can share what they achieved when they come back from their vacation.
