Did you pack headphones when you left the house today?

Many teens wear headphones for multiple hours a day. The devices allow you to listen to music, podcasts, or audiobooks during activities like cleaning your room, commuting to school, or walking your dog. But they also close you off from the rest of the world. For some, wearing headphones has become such an ingrained habit that they don’t even take them off during conversations.

Those who like wearing headphones in public say it helps them mentally reset by canceling out noise. Others think wearing headphones in public is rude, because it makes people appear disinterested in or unaware of their surroundings. What do you think? Is it rude to wear headphones in public?

Yes

Wearing headphones has many benefits, like helping with focus, providing entertainment, and enabling a sense of privacy. Nevertheless, wearing headphones in public environments is impolite and antisocial. While headphones add fun to mundane activities, at times they become barriers to communication. They create the impression that the headphone wearer is indifferent to what’s going on around them. I’ve spent time with friends wearing headphones and felt disappointed that they weren’t more engaged. It can be particularly problematic in schools, where students sometimes use headphones to ignore their teachers.

Also, exposure to sound through headphones is likely to cause people to be less aware of their environment. And taking breaks from listening to music or podcasts helps people think. The most creative ideas that I’ve come up with were generated when I was thinking in silence.

No

People should be allowed to wear headphones in public without facing judgment from others. Many of my friends love to listen to podcasts, allowing them to learn about topics they’re interested in when they are doing something boring like waiting in line. Listening to music can reduce teens’ stress levels and benefit their mental health. When emotions are running high, putting on headphones allows people to zone out and take a helpful step back from social interactions. Additionally, public spaces are meant for everyone, and people should have the personal freedom to wear headphones if they’d like.

The drawbacks of a person wearing headphones in public can include appearing rude or seeming like they are not paying attention during a conversation. However, if I notice someone wearing headphones, it signals to me that they want to relax and recharge—not that they’re being rude.
