Life Hacks: Calculate a Tip

THE PROBLEM

You’re grabbing a bite with your friends and the bill comes. You know you’re supposed to leave a tip, but nobody is sure how much is expected, or how to calculate the amount without pulling out your phone.

THE HACK

A good rule of thumb is to tip about 20 percent of the pre-tax bill at a table-service restaurant. Here’s how to figure it out without a calculator.

STEP 1

Look at the bill and find the total before the tax has been added. Then find the decimal point, which separates dollars and cents.

STEP 2

Move the decimal point one place to the left to get 10 percent of the bill.

STEP 3

Doubling that number will give you 20 percent. (If you need to make the math simpler, you can estimate.)
