Lesson Plan: I’m a Letter Carrier

PREPARE TO READ

Display the article’s photos and headline. Ask: What do you think a letter carrier does day-to-day? What qualities might help someone do that job well?

Write students’ responses on the board, then briefly discuss how these traits might connect to community well-being.

READ AND RESPOND

Divide students into pairs. Instruct them to partner-read the article, noting examples of Lawrence Adair’s reliability and how he cares for his community.

After students read, discuss as a class:

  • What inspired Lawrence to become a letter carrier?
  • What challenges does he face?
  • How does his work strengthen neighborhood connections?

Assign the comprehension quiz and critical-thinking questions to assess student learning.

EXTEND

Invite students to write a short journal entry titled “A Day in the Life of a Letter Carrier” in which they describe what they imagine to be a typical day in Lawrence’s life. Prompt students to describe in their journals at least one moment from Lawrence’s day that shows problem solving or kindness.
