Lesson Plan: Everything You Need to Know About Laundry

PREPARE TO READ

Ask: What household chores have you learned to do on your own? Which were the hardest for you to learn? Explain that learning to do laundry is one of the most basic and important life skills.

Show an image of laundry symbols on clothing tags, or bring in clothing items with different tags. Ask: Why might these symbols be useful? What could happen if you ignore them? Tell students that as they read this article about laundry, they should record facts they find most useful.

READ AND RESPOND

Have students read the article in pairs, then discuss as a class:

  • What steps come before putting clothes in the washing machine?
  • Why does sorting laundry by color or fabric matter?
  • How does structure of the article help support your understanding?

Use the comprehension quiz and critical-thinking questions to check for understanding.

EXTEND

Ask: What other questions do you have about laundry that the article didn’t answer? Have students use trusted sources to find the answer, then create their own simple “Laundry 101” infographic illustrating the answer.
