Lesson Plan: Should Social Media Challenges Be Banned?

PREPARE TO READ

Project the article spread, and read the debate question aloud.

Designate one side of the room “YES” and the other side of the room “NO.” Ask students to move to the side of the room that matches their answer to the debate question. Tally how many students chose each answer, and record the totals on the board. Invite students to share the reasoning for their answers.

READ AND DISCUSS

Have students return to their seats and read the article independently or with a partner.

Reconvene and ask:

  • What information did you find most surprising or interesting in the article?
  • How can social media challenges be beneficial?
  • How can they be harmful?
  • Did reading the article change your thinking?

Take another student vote, and enter your class total in the online poll.

RESPOND TO READING

Now have students write their own response to the debate question.

To help students prepare, have students respond to the critical-thinking questions to analyze the arguments made by the student writers. Then have students write a paragraph explaining their view, giving at least three reasons for their choice.
