Thyra and Vivian, 16, are using origami to create community and improve mental health.
PREPARE TO READ
Before you read, write the word mindfulness on the board. Invite students to share their ideas about its meaning. Show how dividing the word into sections, “Mind-” “-ful-” and “-ness,” can help you better understand it.
Review the word’s definition in the magazine. Ask: What hobbies that you enjoy promote mindfulness? Write several activities on the board. Invite students to describe how these activities make them feel.
READ AND DISCUSS
Read the article together with students, pausing after each section to review key ideas and unfamiliar vocabulary. Ask: How does origami promote mindfulness? How can origami support community?
Return to the list of activities on the board. Ask: How could you turn one of these hobbies into a project to help others?
RESPOND TO READING
Use the comprehension quiz or the critical-thinking questions as informal assessments.
Students can then complete the extension activity to make eye-catching posters aimed at persuading others to try one of their hobbies, emphasizing its health benefits. Have students present their posters to the class.
