Lesson Plan: Everything You Need to Know About Acne

PREPARE TO READ

Ask: What is skin and what is its job? Have students share several ideas.

Then show the class the video “What You Need to Know About Skin,” available on the Choices website. After watching, ask:

What new information did you learn about the function of skin?

Which facts about skin did you find most interesting or surprising?

READ AND DISCUSS

Have students read the article in pairs or small groups. As they read, ask them to consider the essential questions: Why is acne more common for teens, and what can they do to address it?

Have the student groups jot down what they consider the three most important pieces of information for teens to help them care for their skin. Once everyone is finished, have each group present its top three tips.

RESPOND TO READING

Check students’ comprehension by assigning them the article’s comprehension quiz or critical-thinking questions.

Ask: What other questions do you have about acne or skin? Extend the lesson by having students research and write a paragraph to answer their questions, providing the trusted sources where they found the information.
