I’m a Librarian

Ayanna Mayes has always loved stories. So when it came time for a career, Ayanna became a school librarian. Today she runs the library at a public high school, where she helps students find books, magazines, and other materials. She also teaches students how to do research. Like Ayanna, most librarians help people access information. You’re probably used to seeing librarians at your school or public library, but they can also work in places like universities, museums, and hospitals. If you love reading and are passionate about connecting people to literature and knowledge, read Ayanna’s story to learn more about becoming a librarian.

As a kid in Decatur, Georgia, I loved reading and writing stories. I still remember the first chapter book I finished reading all by myself, Superfudge by Judy Blume.

In my 20s, I worked at a state education office in South Carolina. The school librarians I met were some of the happiest people I’d ever known! I was inspired by them.

Today I work at a high school. I get to school at 8 a.m., get the library ready, and put on music. Students come in needing help finding books or using technology.

Some days, I visit classrooms. I teach students how to find reliable sources. I show them how to search online and use the school’s resources to do research.

I love working with teens! They’re the best because they’re discovering what their interests are. It’s awesome that I get to be a guide in that discovery.
