David Derrick is the director of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana 2, which hits theaters on November 27. Before directing Moana 2, David studied animation and worked as an artist on animated films, including Encanto, Moana, and Raya and the Last Dragon. Unlike live-action movies, which feature human actors and real locations, animated movies start as a series of drawings. David works with a big team of artists and storytellers to make the drawings come to life. Directors of animated movies help transform illustrations into exciting and complex stories. I grew up in Utah. I’ve loved drawing ever since I was a little kid. In school, I’d draw tigers and lions all over the page if I finished a vocabulary test early. I loved imagining the animals coming to life.

I thought I’d be a painter or sculptor. Then in college I saw the animated movie Tarzan. It was amazing! I transferred to California Institute of the Arts to study animation.

After college, I worked on the first Moana movie. My job was as a storyboard artist. Storyboard artists translate the words in scripts into pictures.

The Moana films are set in ancient Polynesia. We spoke to Polynesian experts to get our details right. Some of my family is Polynesian. I was honored to represent them.

Moana 2 is my first film as a director. I meet with the animators and storyboard artists, watch scenes, and give feedback. I love seeing everyone’s vision come to life!

David’s Tips for Working in Animation

1. Practice different styles of drawing. Pay attention to how your favorite characters move in animated films.

2. Take art classes. You don’t need a college degree, but you do need examples of your work.

3. Apply for an internship at a film studio that makes animated movies. This could lead to a full-time job.
