READING AND DISCUSSION

  • Have your students read the debate “Are Teens Too Old to Trick-or-Treat?” independently; read the debate out loud to them; or have one student read one side of the debate and another student read the other side.
  • After they’ve read the debate, revisit the pre-reading question. Have their answers changed?

Continue the learning journey with the following writing prompt:

In LET’S TALK TRICK-OR-TREAT, have your class settle the debate through partner discussion. Once they have picked a side, have them use the skill sheet to individually write down 3-5 reasons for their thinking. Then have them find a partner and spend a few minutes discussing their position. Have students switch discussion partners until they have spoken with three or four different classmates. Once discussion time is over, call on a few volunteers to share their perspective. Have students answer the reflection questions at the end.
