Moment of Calm: Loosen Up

You probably spend most of your school day sitting in a chair. While sitting might seem more relaxing than standing or walking, it actually takes a toll on your neck, back, and shoulders. Taking a few minutes to stretch during the day can help. Stretching reduces stress and aids in relaxation. Here are three stretches you can try without even getting up from your chair.

Neck Stretch

Let your arms hang at your sides. Relax your shoulders. Tilt your neck gently to the right, like you’re trying to touch your right shoulder with your right ear, until you feel a stretch. Hold for 15 seconds while taking deep breaths, then repeat on the left side.

Spinal Twist

Place both feet flat on the floor and sit up straight. Extend both arms above your head, then twist to the right. Put your right hand on the back of your chair and your left hand on your thigh. Look over your right shoulder. Hold for 15 seconds, then repeat on the left side.

Bear Hug

Sitting up straight, open your arms wide. Give yourself a hug by wrapping your arms around your chest. Try to reach the opposite shoulder with each hand. Hold for 15 seconds, then release.
