The first time Daniella Zeman played a video game as a kid, she was amazed by how realistic the game’s world looked. Today she’s one of the artists who helps make video games seem so believable. Her specific job is called a materials artist. It involves creating the appearance of the surfaces, or outsides, of things in a game. If you’ve played a game where a character bit into a shiny apple or walked through a forest of trees, you’ve seen the work of materials artists. Daniella's worked on games including Civilization 7, XCOM 2, and Marvel’s Spider-Man. She’s also developing a game with her friends. If you’re interested in the gaming industry, check out Daniella’s story.

When I was 7, my dad brought home a PlayStation. We played a game called Oddworld for six hours straight. The game is set on a distant planet, with deserts, jungles, and icy mountains. I thought it was amazing!

I studied painting and sculpture in art school. After graduating, I got an internship at a game studio, and I’ve been working on video games ever since.

Whenever possible, my team and I take walks outside for inspiration and to get some fresh air. One time, we went to a bamboo forest for art research.

Working on games requires a lot of collaboration. In my office, we play a lot of games together. We test our own products, but we also have fun playing some classics.

When we finish a game, we have a launch party. Everyone gathers to watch the game trailer. It’s really satisfying to come together to celebrate the game’s release.
