Lesson Plan: My Life With Hearing Loss

Read about one teen living with hearing loss and find out how she learned to advocate for herself.

1. Preparing to Read

Before you read the article “My Life With Hearing Loss,” ask your students the following pre-reading question:

How does hearing loss affect people, and what can I do to be an advocate for those living with hearing loss?

2. Reading and Discussing

  • Have your students read the article “My Life With Hearing Loss” independently; read the article out loud to them; or have students partner-read the article out loud.
  • After they’ve read the article, revisit the pre-reading question. Have their answers changed?
  • Next, have your students answer the Close-Reading and Critical-Thinking questions, either working in small groups or independently.

After your students have read the article, give them the chance to become HEARING LOSS AWARENESS advocates. Working in small groups, have them revisit the article to select their top five ways to be an advocate for those with hearing loss. Display the posters in the classroom or hallway for maximum impact!
