Lesson Plan: A User’s Guide to Getting (and Keeping) a Summer Job

Summer’s the perfect time to develop new skills, boost your resume, and—oh yeah—make some sweet, sweet cash. Here’s how to find a job so perfect it doesn’t even feel like work.

1. Preparing to Read

Before you read the article “A User’s Guide to Getting (and Keeping!) a Job,” ask your students the following pre-reading question:

How does having a job benefit teens, and how do you choose the job that is best for you?

2. Reading and Discussing

  • Have your students read the article “A User’s Guide tto Getting (and Keeping!) a Job” independently; read the article out loud to them; or have students partner-read the article out loud.
  • After they’ve read the article, revisit the pre-reading question. Have their answers changed? 
  • Next, have your students answer the Close-Reading and Critical-Thinking questions, either working in small groups or independently.

  1. What are some benefits of having a job as a teen? List at least two benefits mentioned in the article.
  2. How can you figure out which summer job might be a good fit for you?


Critical-Thinking Questions

  1. Have you ever had a summer job? If your answer is no, what type of job do you think you might like to do during the summer? If your answer is yes, describe the job and explain whether or not you liked it and why.

  2. How can having a summer job as a teen positively impact your future?

Continue the learning journey with the following extension activity:

In MY DREAM JOB, have students write down some of their interests and personality traits. Then have them use a mix of their own ideas and information from the article to find jobs in their area that are ideal for them. As an alternative activity, students who already have their dream job can opt to share a short presentation on how they found their job and why they love it.
