ESSENTIAL QUESTION

How can I identify and deal with digital dating abuse?

 CLOSE-READING QUESTIONS

  1. What is digital dating abuse? It’s when someone you’re dating is aggressive or controlling—but the abusive behavior takes place online.
  2. What are some signs that you may be experiencing digital dating abuse? List at least two signs mentioned in the article. Signs of digital dating abuse are when a boyfriend or girlfriend (accept any two) : demands your passwords, controls what you post and who you message with, tracks your location, posts hurtful or private information about you, and/or sends you threatening messages.
  3. How did Carlie’s boyfriend use Instagram to digitally abuse her? Tell at least one way. Accept either of the following: He sent her threatening messages; when she blocked him, he would create new accounts so he could still reach her.
  4. How did the girl that Grady used to date make him feel uncomfortable? Possible answers: She wanted to know his location at all times; she used Snap maps to stalk him.

 CRITICAL-THINKING QUESTIONS

  1. The article states that the pandemic may be responsible for digital dating abuse becoming more common among teens. Why do you think this is? Possible answers: Teens are spending more time online because of the pandemic; teens are feeling more anxious in general and express it in their relationships; teens are looking to technology to fill all their relationship needs; teens may not be able to talk to a teacher or school counselor about relationship red flags.
  2. Does your school offer any classes, counseling, or other resources to support teens who may be victims of dating abuse? (If you aren’t sure, ask a teacher, counselor, or administrator to help you answer this question.) Possible answers: School workshops on dating abuse and healthy relationships; school counseling services; health class modules on healthy relationships and/or dating abuse.
  3. Some people who have been in abusive relationships choose to call themselves “survivors” instead of “victims.” Why do you think this is? Possible answer: The word “victim” communicates that the person being abused was or is helpless, while “survivor” communicates their power to change the situation.
  4. Imagine a close friend has just revealed to you that a boyfriend or girlfriend is being abusive to them online. How would you support that friend? Possible answers: Ask them if they are open to getting help; share resources for how to deal with digital dating abuse; be a good listener.
