Mikaela Shiffrin is now the top woman on the US Olympic ski team team after Lindsey Vonn was sidelined for surgery. Even though her new position is filled with stress and high expectations, she says she "doesn't see pressure as a negative." We agree. Also on the topic of stress, a new survey from the American Psychological Association found that American teens are more stressed than their parents. “Parents and other adults can play a critical role in helping teens get a handle on stress by modeling healthy stress management behaviors,”said Norman Anderson, the APA CEO and Executive Vice President. We all know that many teens spend their last few minutes before bed (or longer) responding to texts or checking Twitter. Research has found that looking at blue light, the one produced by smartphones, sets off brain receptors that keep us awake. Tell your teen to stay away from screens before bedtime to avoid lying awake in the dark when they could be fast asleep. 4. Wade Davis, a former NFL star, writes about his experience coming out to the football community in this insightful Sports Illustrated essay. More specifically, he reflects on the ways times are changing when he compares his experience coming out with Michael Sam's, who has only recently announced he's gay. "Where I had internalized homophobia and crippling doubts about how I would be received, Michael knew 100% that his teammates wouldn’t care," he said.
