Choices Challenge: Does the Media Get You?
How do the teen characters you see on screen compare with real life? Go forth and investigate—then join us in changing those misconceptions!
1. DO YOUR RESEARCH
Think about shows and/or movies with teen characters, then watch and take notes. How are young people portrayed? What stereotypes are reinforced? Is there enough diversity?
2. IDENTIFY THE PROBLEMS
Use our Fake Teens/Real Teens Worksheet to tell us what the media gets wrong. You can use the space to draw, collage, write—however you can best get your point across.
3. CREATE YOUR CHARACTER
Now tell us what you’d like to see instead! Use the bottom of the worksheet to create a Real Teen character that truly represents you and that counteracts the stereotypes you’re sick of seeing.
Send us your completed Fake Teens/Real Teens Worksheet. We’ll choose one student winner (based on critical thinking and creativity) to get a $50 gift card. We’ll also be giving a $75 DonorsChoose gift card to the teacher whose class sends us the most entries!
No purchase necessary. Entries must be submitted by 2/15/16 for eligibility. Void where prohibited. For complete rules, go to Scholastic.com/Choices
